2018 Annual General Meeting

260 members attended the Law Society’s 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 31 May. The Law Society Function Room was fully packed that evening.

As in past years, apart from the formal business, the ceremony of admissions to the Law Society’s Roll of Honour and Honorary Membership, the presentation of Certificates of Recognition to the members who have been on the Roll of Solicitors for 50 years or more, and the prize presentation to the outstanding achievers in our sports and recreation teams were held on the occasion of the AGM.

Mr. Ip Shing Hing, Mr. Vincent Liang and Mr. Peter Sit were formally admitted to the Law Society’s Roll of Honour on 31 May 2018.

Mr. Ip, Mr. Liang and Mr. Sit are highly respected members of the profession whose distinguished contributions to the Law Society, the practice of law and the development of the legal profession in Hong Kong as a whole have set a role model for us all.

Mr. Ip Shing Hing was President of the Law Society from 2002 to 2004. He also led the Law Society’s work in enhancing members’ interests in his capacity as the inaugural Chair of the Standing Committee on Member Services when it was first set up in 2008. Mr. Liang was Vice President of the Law Society from 1996 to 1998. With his extensive experience in conveyancing and project work, he was particularly active in the Property Committee offering his wise counsel from 2000 to 2014. Mr. Peter Sit served on the Council from 1995 to 2000 and contributed his valuable time and expertise to the work of the Law Society through his active participation in numerous Law Society Committees over the years including chairing the Hong Kong Lawyer Editorial Board.

Honorary membership of the Law Society is awarded to non-members of the Law Society who have made significant contribution to the development of the legal profession. The Law Society admitted its first honorary member, Mr. Andrew Li, our former Chief Justice, in 2011. Professor Michael Wilkinson is the second honorary member admitted by the Law Society for his tremendous contribution in legal education and generally in the legal field in Hong Kong. The long list of publications by Professor Wilkinson needs no introduction as most of our members were his former students.

The space allocated for this column is far too limited for a fair elaboration of the long list of distinguished services that the awardees have selflessly volunteered for the benefit of the profession over the years. We will nevertheless make available the records of the full proceedings of the AGM including the admission ceremony and the inspiring speeches by the awardees on the members’ zone of the Law Society website.

The presentation of a Certificate of Recognition to members who have been on the Roll of Solicitors for 50 years as a gesture of respect for their outstanding achievement was also held. The awardees this year were Ms. Leung Oi See Elsie, Mr. Wong Kai Tung Tony and Mr. Tsang Wing Wah.
