The Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong ("CUHK") has much pleasure in inviting you to the Book Launch and Conference on "Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict" at the Graduate Law Centre in Admiralty on 7-8 October.
A sitting judge of the International Criminal Court ("ICC") and the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ("ICTY") will lead a group of experts for a major international conference on the topic of “Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict.” The conference’s keynote speaker will be ICC Judge Christine Van den Wyngaert, who has dealt with the Jean-Pierre Bemba case, the ICC’s first to recognise rape as a weapon of war. Among the experts who will be chairing panels include ICTY Chief Prosecutor and CUHK Law Visiting Professor (honorary) Serge Brammertz and Hong Kong High Court Judge Kevin Zervos.
The panels will explore sexual violence in conflicts around the world but with a focus on Asia, including Sri Lanka, Syria, East Timor, Cambodia and Bangladesh. One will also consider the issue of “Comfort Women” during World War II and the ongoing controversies regarding justice and reparations. Panelists will include celebrity UK Barrister Jeremy Dein, QC, of 25 Bedford Road, Canadian Department of Justice Senior Counsel Joseph Rikhof and International Committee for the Red Cross Legal Advisor (SE Asia) Kelisiana Thynne. The conference will begin at 9 a.m. at the Warren Chan Moot Court at CUHK’s Graduate Law Centre ("GLC").
