CUHK Law Alumnus Awarded Best Orator in Essex Court Chambers – Singapore Academy of Law International Mooting Competition

CUHK Law alumni Keith Cheung (PCLL 2016; JD 2015, CUHK) and Cynthia Or (PCLL 2015; JD 2014, CUHK) participated in the Essex Court Chambers – Singapore Academy of Law (ECC-SAL) International Mooting Competition held at the Supreme Court of Singapore from 7–11 January 2017. Keith and Cynthia are both trainee solicitors at international law firms in Hong Kong and were previously members of the CUHK Vis Moot team.

The team progressed to the semi-final – making the last four teams in the competition, and the Faculty is delighted that Keith also won the award for the Best Orator (Advocate) in the contest.

This is the first time that a team from Hong Kong has participated in the ECC-SAL moot and they were the only non-Singaporean team to qualify for the advanced rounds. Teams from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore and South Korea participated in the competition.

Students take part in mooting to improve their legal research, legal reasoning, advocacy, communication and case analysis skills as well as their ability to think quickly on their feet and their self-confidence. CUHK Law has participated in major mooting competitions since the Faculty was established in 2006 with great success. In 2009, 2010 and 2016 the CUHK team won the Hong Kong rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Competition and went on to represent Hong Kong in the International Finals in Washington, DC. In addition, in Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the CUHK team advanced to the semi-final round in 2013, ranked second in 2014 and won the championship in 2016. CUHK Law has also achieved success in the International Criminal Court (“ICC”) moot court competition. In 2014, it claimed fourth place in the international rounds of the competition and reached the semi-final round in 2015. In 2014, CUHK Law finished in second place in the ICC Moot Court Competition, Chinese Version, and won the championship in 2016. The Faculty was proud to win the championship of LAWASIA International Moot Competition in 2013 and claimed second place in 2014.
