CUHK Law Students Compete in Regional and International Moot Court Competitions

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2019

The CUHK Law team competed in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, Hong Kong rounds on 23-24 February 2019. The team, comprising students Chung Cheuk Kwan Benny (PCLL), Fong Ka Kei Katie (LLB), Leung Hoi Ming Michael (LLB), Ma Hei Nok Cherry (PCLL) and Tse Jennifer Angela (PCLL), won all three oralist prizes (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) at the competition. The team was coached by Professor Stephen Hall and supported by student coaches Chim Ho Man Eric and Lam Kai Shing Isaac.

The 10th Leiden-Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition

CUHK Law participated in the 10th Leiden-Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition in Chandigarh, India on 4-7 April 2019 and was the only team from Hong Kong entering the competition. The competition is one of its kind in offering exposure to both international air law and public international law. This year, a total of 18 teams representing 11 different countries entered the international round, with 50 esteemed international experts from 40 countries judged in the competition.

Competed with teams from universities including National University of Singapore (Singapore), Leiden University (The Netherlands), St. Petersburg State University (Russia), McGill University (Canada), Hidayatullah National Law University Raipur (Chhattisgarh, India) and National Law Institute University (Bhopal, India), the CUHK Law team was ranked 5th for Respondent and 6th for Applicant.

The 26th Annual Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot

The 26th Annual Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot was held in Vienna, Austria from 11-18 April 2019. The competition involved some 2,500 law students representing 380 law schools from 87 countries, and 1,300 judges comprising lawyers, professional arbitrators and academics.

The CUHK Law team qualified for the final rounds of the competition and was ranked 16th out of the 380 participating teams, with team member Hung Vanessa Wai-yan (JD) awarded an Honourable Mention (top 10%) for her outstanding advocacy.

The CUHK Law team met Secretary for Justice Ms Teresa Cheng GBS, SC, JP at the closing ceremony.
