Greater China Legal History Seminar Series

The last two CPD accredited Greater China Legal History seminars organised by the Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (“CUHK Law”) in 2018-19 academic year were well received with an audience of over 300 including students, academics and members of the legal professions.

“Chinese Shipwrecks, Treasure Hunters and the History of Underwater Cultural Heritage Regimes” by Professor Steven Gallagher on 22 February 2019

This seminar presented by CUHK Law Professor Steven Gallagher introduced the concept of underwater culture heritage and discussed the history of shipwrecks, their recovery, and sales especially in Hong Kong and China. Professor Gallagher illustrated the development of the policy and law on the protection of underwater culture heritage over the past century. He identified the recent issues involving wreck recovery in South East Asia and its impact on the protection of underwater cultural heritage, concluding with questions in relation to the establishment of legal framework for the protection of underwater cultural heritage wreck in Hong Kong and China.

“The Development of Legal Compliance – A Hong Kong Perspective” by Professor Douglas Arner on 8 March 2019

Delivered by Professor Douglas Arner, Kerry Holdings Professor in Law, University of Hong Kong, this seminar looked at the international evolution of legal compliance and pointed to Hong Kong specifics. Professor Arner discussed the current status and potential future development of this rather young industry. He examined the explosive growth of the compliance bodies and personnel in the financial sector and the various driving forces behind this development, in addition to explaining compliance tools and the design of compliance systems in today’s tech data world. He closed the seminar with a Q&A session that drew enthusiastic response from the audience.

New Greater China Legal History Seminar Series 2019-20

The Greater China Legal History Seminar Series 2018-19 has been successfully concluded with a total of nearly 700 participants attended.
