Happy Valentine’s Day to Me

Right before Valentine’s Day, I got a chance to test drive the devastatingly handsome Mercedes-AMG GT, which I considered a fitting gift for myself. Roses are so last year, right? Upon arriving at the dealership, the Fleet Sales Consultant, Mr. Vasco Li, led me to a feisty hunk. Butterflies welled up in my stomach as I cast my eyes on the muscular frame of the rosy red two-seater sports coupe endowed with 462 horsepower. Its exterior bodywork is exquisite, and it even has a spacious boot. How dreamy!

Before setting out for Lei King Wan via Island Eastern Corridor, Vasco briefed me about the configuration of the GT. He told me that this supercar came loaded with a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine in the front, rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, so I am sure you can understand why I was so thrilled to take it for a spin.

As I slipped behind the wheel, I didn’t waste even a minute before firing up the engine to test its limits. I admired the GT’s stylish dashboard, as the car stood ready, like an armoured knight to avenge my honour, on Causeway Bay’s major roads, even though they weren’t congested. My eyes twinkled when I learned that you can choose between chrome, matt carbon, high-gloss carbon, black diamond or matt silver dashboard finishes.

Its centre console contained buttons that are arranged to mimic the cylinder layout of a V-8 engine and are joined by the latest version of Mercedes’ COMMAND infotainment system, which uses a single controller to operate many of the car’s functions through a screen. It was a cinch to use, and it has apparently allowed Mercedes to reduce the number of buttons, dials and switches in the car.

However, what surprised me the most about the GT was its superior suspension, even in the sports mode. It had a firm grip when I turned corners, which gave me a heightened sense of comfort and faith in its stability. When I pressed on the brake or the throttle, the car swiftly responded. The steering was light and sensitive, and its wide rim steering allowed me to take this metal beast by the scruff of the neck.

It was powerful, fast and utterly mind-blowing, so it came as no surprise that it attracted quite a few admirers during the morning jaunt. While some drivers even attempted to go head-to-head with the GT on Island Eastern Corridor, the lawyer in me restrained from unleashing its full fury.

Am I still swooning after this unforgettable rendezvous with my dream car? You better believe it! If only I could have this HK$2.1 million sensation regularly escort me down the road. Flowers wither within a week, but my memory of this pre-Valentine’s Day test drive will last for a lifetime.
