The Law Society (“Society”) and the Hong Kong Academy of Law (“Academy”) organised a total of 37 seminars in June, 6 of which had an audience of over 100.
One of the six seminars was “Anti-Money Laundering Seminar for Lawyers” held on 13 June. The seminar apprised the attendees of the major provisions in the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance, Cap. 615 which came into effect on 1 March 2018 and provided an overview of the developments in international and domestic anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing. The speakers were Mr. Alan Linning and Ms. Kareena Teh, Members of the Anti-Money Laundering Committee of the Society, Mr. Mickey Wai, Assistant Secretary for Security, Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau, Ms. Jennifer Fok, Senior Public Prosecutor of the Department of Justice and Ms. Christine Hui, Chief Inspector of Police, Joint Financial Intelligence Unit of the Hong Kong Police Force. The seminar attracted over 250 attendees.
Another of the six seminars was “Updates on the Property Management Services Ordinance (“PMSO”) and the Building Management Ordinance (“BMO”)” held on 21 June. The seminar provided an overview of the roles of the Property Management Services Authority (“PMSA”) , the arrangements of levy collection under the PMSO and an update on the BMO. The speakers were Mr. Tony Tse, Chairman of the PMSA, Miss Vega Wong, Assistant Director of Home Affairs of the Home Affairs Department and Mr. Kevin Cheung, General Manager (Regulatory) of the PMSA. Other speakers participating in the Questions and Answers Session were Mr. W. K. Hong, Chief Assessor (Stamp Office) and Mr. Eddy Wong, Superintendent of Stamp Office (Assignment) of the Inland Revenue Department. Over 280 participants attended the seminar.
The Society and the Academy jointly organized a “Roundtable Discussion on Arbitration” with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (“HKIAC”) on 26 June. Mr. Huen Wong, Past President and Chairman of the Arbitration Committee of the Society and Ms. Sarah Grimmer, Secretary-General of the HKIAC delivered the opening remarks. Mr. Nils Eliasson, Chairperson of the Proceedings Committee of the HKIAC, Ms. Kathryn Sanger, Chairperson of the Appointments Committee of the HKIAC and Mr. John Lee, Member of the Arbitration Committee of the Law Society shared with the audience the proposed changes to the 2013 HKIAC Administered Arbitration Rules, key issues on appointment of arbitrators and risk management on arbitration.
