The Hong Kong Society of Notaries is organising a series of presentations to various professional bodies to promote public knowledge of the profession of Notaries Public.
On 26th November 2020, a one-hour webinar titled “Notaries Public in Hong Kong” was jointly arranged by the Hong Kong Society of Notaries and the In-House Lawyers Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong. The event was well received by Law Society members and about 90 registered to attend, the majority of whom were in-house lawyers. An overview of Notaries Public, including their history, appointment and practice entitlement, regulation and common notarisation services was presented by Mr. Andrew Hart, Past-President and Council Member of the Hong Kong Society of Notaries. Much interest was shown in the practice of Notaries Public and questions from the attendees include issues on notaries public practising otherwise than in or through a solicitor’s firm and professional indemnity insurance for such practices.
The second in the series was a presentation made on 2nd December 2020 to the members of The Association of Corporate Counsel Hong Kong Branch, an association of in-house lawyers in Hong Kong with over 800 members representing a range of industries and organisations in the city. Mr. David Beaves, Past-President and Council Member of the Hong Kong Society of Notaries, gave an overview of the origin of Notaries Public, qualifications for practising and the services which they provide. Over 60 in-house counsels attended the one-hour webinar and they raised questions on various subjects such as solutions for attestation when notaries public cannot physically meet clients during Covid-19, qualifying exams for Notaries Public and whether an in-house counsel can be a Notary Public.
The Hong Kong Society of Notaries is working with other professional bodies like those of the accountants and company secretaries to bring home to their members the services provided by Notaries Public.
The Hong Kong Society of Notaries is working with Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants around mid-January 2021 and The Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries around mid-February 2021 to bring home to their members the services provided by Notaries Public.
