Hong Kong is a multicultural society with people from diverse social and religious backgrounds. In response to the suggestion of our young members, the Young Solicitors’ Group (“YSG”) launched its social awareness outreach and training programme (“Programme“) on 9 September to provide the opportunity for members to better understand discrimination related issues in Hong Kong from various perspectives through the presentations of our three honourable speakers.
The Programme, held at the Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre (“Mosque“) in Tsim Sha Tsui, attracted 69 members. After the opening speech by Vice President Amirali Nasir, the three speakers, Mr. Peter Reading (Legal Counsel of the Equal Opportunities Commission), Ms. Kayla Tam (Campaign Officer of Hong Kong UNISON) and Mr. Michael Vidler (Sole Proprietor of Vidler & Co.), shared their expertise and experience on the topic.
Mr. Reading gave us an overview of the current anti-discrimination legal framework. Ms. Tam shared with us the real-life difficulties and barriers posed to ethnic and religious minorities. Mr. Vidler addressed the technical aspect by analysing different court cases. The three speakers then took questions from the floor.
The Programme concluded with a guided tour and group sharing session by Imam Sulaiman Wang of the Mosque at the prayer chamber. The feedback we received was positive and we hope to organise the Programme again.
