On 19th January 2020, The University of Law (ULaw) held inductions to welcome new students to the part time and full time Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).
It was all hosted via zoom with Aruna Verma, Associate Professor and Programme Director at ULaw Hong Kong Campus leading the sessions. She was joined by Edward Chin, Lecturer at ULaw, who spoke to the students about the wonderful opportunities available when joining the CIArb as a student. Edward told them about the competitions they could join along with the opportunities to have their work published on the CIArb website as well as the great networking opportunities through the Young Members Group.
Alix Povey, Director of Partnership Development also joined the session and spoke to the students on the employability opportunities offered by the university, including the Vis East Moot, which ULaw, Hong Kong campus team are busily preparing for, with the oral rounds to be held in March.
ULaw has a very strong employability service and make a commitment to each student to help them prepare themselves for practice. A tailored programme has been created to give each student a personalised evaluation of themselves which shows their strengths and weaknesses and with recommendations on how to build upon their strengths and to improve in their weaker areas. This is then followed up with a series of workshops that help the students to work on these particular areas, thus making themselves be very well equipped to enter the workplace with a well-rounded skillset.
The mentoring scheme is another initiative that the students were told about and will be availed of which will give them wonderful opportunities to network and meet some of the leading practitioners in Hong Kong.
To give added benefits to our students ULaw also holds a regular Speaker Series; Our next speakers, Dr James Chiu and Dr Choo Kah Lin, will be talking on Healthcare Disputes: Mediator’s and Doctor’s Perspectives on 23rd February 2021. Please visit our website for further details.
